Timothy Takes on London!
We are thrilled to share the success story of Timothy, an individual with Autism who has been a part of our Specialist Care Team for several years now. Timothy has always been extremely close to his family and enjoys regular contact with them. However, when his family goes away on trips, Timothy becomes withdrawn and struggles to engage with support or communication.
Therefore last year, as a team, we made the decision try to turn this time into a positive experience for Timothy. Giving him control and choices in planning and preparing for the times when his family would be away. We asked him to start thinking about what he would like to do during this time, explaining that it would be great to be able to share a story about what he’s been up to, when he catches up with family about their time on holiday.
During this time, Timothy saw a poster for Mrs. Doubtfire, the musical, and immediately decided that he wanted to see it! With the help of his Care Team, Timothy started planning a trip to London to see the musical. Together, we made a budget plan and a social story to ensure that the day would go smoothly.
Despite feeling a bit lonely and out of sorts due to missing his family, Timothy then had an action plan in place to make the most of his day in London. He had full control over every aspect of the trip, from the activities, to the places they would visit and the food they would eat. This level of involvement and decision-making gave Timothy a sense of ownership and excitement for the day ahead.
On the day of the trip, Timothy was incredibly excited and remained engaged throughout the day. The team did a fantastic job in supporting him during what is usually a challenging time, turning it into an activity-filled day that he thoroughly enjoyed. Timothy’s success in planning and executing this trip highlights the importance of providing individuals with Autism the opportunity to have control and make their own choices.
We are incredibly proud of Timothy and the progress he has made in managing his emotions and enjoying the activities he loves and we are committed to continuing to support him in exploring his interests and making the most of his time when his family is away.
This success story shows the power of person-centred support and the impact it can have on individuals with Autism. At SCA Care, we believe in the potential of every individual, and supporting Timothy to enjoy his trip to London is testament to that belief. We now look forward to supporting more individuals like Timothy and helping them achieve their goals and dreams.
