Cognitive skills are the skills the brain uses to think, learn, remember, problem solve and communicate.
When someone has dementia there are different ways we can help people improve their memory and thinking skills. It has been proved that Cognitive Stimulation Therapy can help on a cognitive level and in terms of quality of life.
What is Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST)?
Cognitive Stimulation Therapy, also known as CST, is a structured programme of group activities and discussions. Each group runs once a week for a period of 14 weeks. There is a maximum number of eight participants at a time, along with a group facilitator and a volunteer. Each session lasts one hour and comprises of group activities focused on strengthening and maintaining:
-orientation
-short and long term memory
-problem solving/reasoning skills
-concentration/focus/attention
Our main aim is to get people’s mind active and engaged in a friendly and enjoyable setting.
Carers are invited to have tea/coffee whilst their loved ones attend the session.
Where are the groups?
We currently have CST Groups running from Fenwick Health and Wellbeing Centre in Lyndhurst and in Milford on Sea subject to demand.
