Dental hygienists are specially trained to work as part of the dental team and to give care to patients. They play an important part in dental health care and are mainly concerned with preventive dental and treating gum disease. However, perhaps their most important role is teaching you the best way to look after your teeth and gums to keep your teeth free of plaque. Plaque is a sticky layer that constantly forms on your teeth and can give rise to gum disease. They can give advice about diet and how to prevent decay.
Why see the hygienist privately?
During your examination with the dentist, your oral health will be assessed and a Basic Perio-dontal Exam (BPE) will be carried out. If there are calculus deposits or gum disease present you have the choice to see the dentist or hygienist / therapist for treatment. However, the NHS only provides you with a scale and polish where it is clinically necessary for your health.
The hygienist has been specially trained to carry out scaling and polishing, removing the tartar with manual or ultrasonic instruments. If you have more advanced gum disease, they might need to remove deposits from the root surface under anaesthetic. They can spend longer with you, carrying out cosmetic removal of stain.
What can our hygienist do for you?
Effective oral hygiene is vital in order to help keep your teeth and gums in healthy condition, achieve a brighter smile and fresh breath. Your dental hygienist can provide the following services:
- Administer local anaesthetic injections
- Professional cleaning of your teeth by removing plaque and hard deposits (calculus) that can cause periodontal (gum) disease and bad breath
- Help to change red and inflamed gums to a healthy pink by treating and preventing periodontal (gum) disease
- Polish the teeth to remove food, drink and tobacco staining
- Tooth whitening services can be provided on referral from your dentist
- Provide Individually tailored instructions to help you achieve and maintain a healthy mouth
- Demonstrate effective teeth cleaning techniques using aids such as floss and interdental brushes to remove plaque without causing tooth wear and gum recession.
- Provide dietary advice and advice on exposure to sugary and acidic food and beverages
- Provide advice on smoking cessation to improve the health of your gums
- Discuss in detail the reasons for tooth caries (decay) and erosion.
- Discuss and provide advice on the latest oral hygiene products

A full tailored treatment plan will be given to you after your consultation appointment with a full breakdown of costs.
50% deposit will need to be taken at the time of booking your appointment. This will be retained by the practice if you fail to attend your appointment or give less than 24 hours’ notice to cancel.
If you have periodontitis (chronic gum disease) the appointment may be longer to allow the hygienist to undertake a detailed charting and measuring of pocket depths to correctly assess the extent of your gums disease and treatment plan accordingly. It will also allow the hygienist to numb your mouth prior to a “deep clean”. You may also need more than one appointment. Time will also be well spent advising you on self-care.

The receptionists are very welcoming too, I asked to get my grandson an appointment, unfortunately I had to wait a few weeks, but I’m prepared to wait as I can’t think of a nicer dentist surgery for him to come to, everyone is lovely – 10 out of 10 to all the staff.
